Montenegro is one of the smallest countries in Europe but packs in enough things that leave you convinced to visit it. Tucked cozily between Croatia, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia, and Herzegovina, this beautiful country has something for every traveler. The best news is that Montenegro can be visited visa-free by citizens of Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.
Excited but wondering where to start exploring? Don’t worry; we have you covered. Take a look at these beautiful towns that are breath-taking, to say the least.
Located on the southern coast of Montenegro, Ulcinj is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. Famous for its varied beaches like Velika plaža, Ladies Beach (folk tradition say the beach has qualities conducive to fertility) and Mala plaža. Due to Ulcinj’s proximity to Albania, the culture has middle-eastern influence and is home to beautiful mosques. Due to its roots dating back to the Roman Empire, Ulcinj offers rich medieval architecture, styles, and ruins. Šaško lake and Ulcinj’s salt pond with 200 species of migratory birds are a hot favorite amongst the bird watching community.
This natural port of Kotor, surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period, is located on the Bay of Kotor. Though mistaken as a fjord by many, Kotor is, in fact, a ria (a submerged river canyon). A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kotor, with its overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovćen, provide magnificent views. Visit this city to wander in its quaint streets. Catch numerous attractions like Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, ancient walls, Sveti Đorđe and Gospa od Škrpijela islets off the coast of Perast. A cat lover will love this town as they are the symbol of the city and also have a museum and a square dedicated to this beloved feline.
Historically a fishing town, Sveti Stefan, was converted into a town in 1960. A fortifying wall was built around this island town to protect it from pirate invasions. It is connected to the mainland through a causeway which in itself is a tourist attraction. The island is now home to luxury resort Aman Sveti Stefan and allows entry only to the resort guests. However, the beaches north and south of the island are open to the public.
Located a few kilometers northwest of Kotor, Perast, a small fishing village is very close to the islets of St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks. This gorgeous stone village emulates a quintessential Italian city in its infrastructure and architecture. Its 10 watchtowers, located at strategic places, played a vital role in elevating its security during the Venetian period. Visit this town to witness splendid Baroque architecture, natural beauty, its pristine coastline, and stunning mountain scenery.
If tranquil peace is your idea of a vacation, then you have just hit the jackpot. Rose, a picturesque port, does not find a place on many itineraries which adds to its peaceful nature. Its quiet coves, sandy beaches, and calm sightseeing points allow you to relax and cherish your moments here. Experience the Montenegrin village life first hand and enjoy their delectable seafood. This quiet little town also provides wings to your adventurous soul as it is a perfect diving spot with plenty of marine life.
