Ile De La Barthelasse

The Rhône divides into two enormous arms that surround the Island of Barthelasse at the foot of the fortifications of Avignon, the papal metropolis. It is the largest Rhône river island, a wide expanse of flora and serenity spanning 700 hectares between Villeneuve-Les-Avignon and Avignon, the departments of Gard and Vaucluse, the Provence regions, and Occitanie.

The island of Barthelasse is crisscrossed with walkways and minor roads that are suitable for cycling or jogging along the banks of the Rhône. It is a natural environment that has been conserved and is home to many wild animal species. Herons, beavers, and badgers can be observed with patience and discretion.

Barthelasse Island is a special spot to stay for tourists to Avignon, offering a variety of accommodations such as campgrounds, cottages, hotels, and guest rooms. The La Palmeraie swimming pool, which is open during the summer, contains a 50-meter pool as well as relaxing rooms. Former US President Barack Obama and his family spent a week on Barthelasse Island in June 2019 for their vacation.

• The La Palmeraie swimming pool, also known as the Piscine des Arênes, contains a paddling pool and water activities for children, an Olympic-sized open-air swimming pool and relaxation pools, lawns, 3m, and 5m diving boards, and a snack bar. From June through September, it is open. Between the towpath and the foot of the Rocher des Doms, there is a free river shuttle.
• Bike rides on the island's marked pathways.
• The ViaRhôna, a cycle path that connects Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea in Port Saint-Louis du Rhône, passes through Barthelasse.
• Fishing in the Rhône's arms.
• 1000 paddles: May canoe and kayak event.
• Rides on the Rhône with canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.
• La Reboule and the Calvet season: farms and agricultural produce.
• Horseback riding: pony club and riding school.
• Château de Bouchonny, also known as Château de la Barthelasse, was built in the 18th century and is included in the inventory of historical monuments.
• Off Festival locations on Barthelasse Island include l'Îlot Chapiteaux, Le Kabarouf, and Contre Courant.
