Pont Saint Bénézet, also known as Pont d'Avignon, was memorialized in the nursery rhyme Sur le Pont d'Avignon, which translates as 'On the Bridge of Avignon.' The historic stone bridge has shrunk to a fraction of its previous size. The Rhône River was crossed by the 2,952-foot-long bridge built in the 12th century. It now ends abruptly before nearing the other side, yet it remains a significant link back to Avignon's early days.

Begin your tour with an exhibition on the bridge's history. Get yourself a multimedia audio guide to the crossing. There is also an audio guide for the visually impaired. The guides are offered in 11 languages at a nominal additional cost. Take the stairs or the elevator to the top of the bridge.

The Pont d'Avignon, or Pont Saint Bénézet, is named after St. Bénézet, who, according to Christian mythology, had a vision directing him to build a bridge in Avignon. Visit the little stone chapel that previously contained his tomb and sits on the third pillar. Because of the threat of floods, the saint's bones had to be relocated and are now protected at the city's St. Didier Church.

Wander down to the bridge's conclusion for stunning views of the cathedral tower and the Palais des Papes. The best views of the bridge are from the Rhône's banks further upstream or downstream, as well as from the summit of Rocher des Doms Park. The Pont d'Avignon is open all year. The bridge is a short walk from the town center and is well-marked from there.
