The Vieux-Port in La Rochelle, located in the Charente-Maritime region of France, is both the city's oldest port and the historical center of the town (Nouvelle-Aquitaine).

Even in this day and age, the port is teeming with ships of all ages, and one of the best ways to take in the scene is by taking a stroll along the quays.

THINGS TO DO AT VIEUX PORT:

  • Admire art and architectural style of Saint-Ferréol les Augustins:

This church belongs to the Roman Catholic faith and can be found on the Quai des Belges in the easternmost part of the Old Port of Marseille. The origins of the church can be traced back to the 12th century, when the land on which it now stands was owned by the Knights Templar. This is a stunning addition to the already beautiful Old Port as a result of the mishmash of styles and influences that work together to create a stunning effect.

  • Take the boat to the Chateau d'If.:

A trip to the fascinating island of Chateau d'If is essential to any exploration of the surrounding area. The island did not have a single person living on it until the 16th century, when King Francois I of France recognised the strategic value of the location and gave his approval for the construction of a fort on the island.

  • Pray and seek blessings a the Monastery of Saint Victor:

It is believed that this Roman Catholic church in France, which was established in the fifth century by the Christian monk and theologian Jean Cassien, is one of the oldest places of worship in the country of France. The church is home to a number of fascinating archaeological and architectural features, but the view that can be had from the towers onto the port below is most likely the highlight of the church.

  • Observe the bustling activity that takes place in the Fish Market:

This historic site is deeply ingrained in the fabric of the Old Port neighborhood and contributes significantly to its character. It is also where tourists and locals who have been coming to the market their whole lives to buy seafood can mingle. Because it was caught in the Mediterranean Sea in the wee hours of the morning, the fish up for sale has been carefully selected to be of the highest possible quality.

  • Taste a little bit of everything:

The quality of the food served in the port no longer deviates from the standard set by the French culinary tradition, for which France is justifiably renowned worldwide. The port's waterfront is lined with high-caliber restaurants and cafés; most of these establishments feature outdoor seating for their customers, allowing them to make the most of the warm weather typical of the southern region of France. It should not come as a surprise that the restaurants specializing in seafood are among the best in the area.

  • Watch as the sun goes down:

Take a seat on one of the terraces with a beverage in your hand and watch as the harbor is illuminated by the last, otherworldly rays of the sun. Feel free to ride at dusk; the view from the top of the ride over the harbor, the water, and the city is breathtaking.
